Ask Tinh for input on what the students will want/expect from a school like this. He knows what the young VN computer hackers will want. We need to make it attractive to them.
Students should be passionate about computers. Real geeks and hackers. Not only there because they think it will make them a lot of money or because their parents told them to go.
Teach about IT ethics and Free Software. Translate RMS video into Vietnamese subtitles.
Special attention must be paid to cultural issues. Turn the students into real hackers who are not afraid to ask questions. Vietnamese are afraid to let you know they don't know something. This must be changed. Students who ask for help must be rewarded. Also teach them how to ask questions the smart way. http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Educational, not vocational. Engineer, not mechanic. Focus on learning how to learn so they can go on to accomplish anything. Be a chef, not a cook. Cook just follows recipes. The Chef knows why things taste good and writes the recipes.
How do you translate "Free Software" into Vietnamese? Free like freedom, not price. Like "software libre" in spanish.
Everything should be very hands on and practical, not just theory. Lots of theory but lots of practical too.
Students need their own workstation and they should all be the same so they can work together and help each other. Laptops? Desktops? One at home and one at school? Cheap FreeNX? terminals?
Keep students associated with the school for the long term in inexpensive ways. Build community. Get students to help each other and share with each other like the Free Software community does.
- Everyone gets a free server to use for whatever they want on my xen-aoe cluster. They can learn Linux with it and maybe even some day start their business with it after they graduate. Included in their school fees. Cheap price to continue using it after they leave the school. We can sell general hosting services on the same cluster.
- Free email address @copilotco.com to use for as long as they want.
- Free VOIP account on the Copilot phone system. Free inter-system calls. Pre-pay for long distance.
Best students may have opportunity to go to US to see real datacenters, servers, how real IT business works.
Recruit Teachers like maybe Tinh or Kevin. Need to be really good at IT and good at teaching. Develop teacher code of conduct. No dating students, no unprofessional behavior, students must not visit teachers house, etc.
Possibly recruit guest teachers from the US to spend 4 months to teach some classes.
Need to prepare all curriculum so all teachers teach the same thing the same way.
Areas of curriculum:
- Hardware
- Networking
- Linux/Operating Systems
- Programming
Lots of great books, free books, pre-existing curriculum on the web. Use it.
