If setting them to 0 doesn't work, maybe try -1?

It seems to work for me:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 8199
Server version: 5.0.45-5-log (Debian)

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> set wait_timeout=-1;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

mysql> set interactive_timeout=-1;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)

Greetings,
       Michel
