The network is up when aoe tries to use the network. I run the command:

/sbin/ip link set up dev eth0

to bring up the interface in the initrd. I have also caused the initrd 
to stop and give me a shell where I can run this command and execute the 
aoe discover command manually.

Both ends do auto-crossover. I am not using a crossover cable. I do get 
link lights and I can see the PXE dhcp requests over the cable when the 
machine is booting.

Yes, I have read the Linux Journal and Linux Magazine articles. I think 
that is how I first heard about it. I've read the protocol spec (all 8 
pages!) and various other things.
